Veekay Diamants

Veekay Diamants is situated in Prasad Chambers at the Opera House. If you know anything about the diamond trade in Mumbai, you know this is the place to be. Our office is at 216, and it’s quite a hectic environment. The building is old and full of tiny offices all doing similar work. Security is very tight here, so there are always guards around and lots of checking at the entrance. Inside our room, it’s all about the stones. We have specialized lighting and magnifying loupes sitting on every desk. It’s a lot of squinting and careful sorting. The atmosphere is very business-like, but in a traditional way. You see people carrying small parcels and talking quietly in the hallways. We don’t have much in the way of decoration, just the tools we need and a few chairs for visitors. The air conditioning is always on full blast because the building gets quite warm with all the people and lights. Lunchtimes are funny because everyone spills out into the narrow streets to find something to eat. It’s a high-pressure kind of place because the items we handle are so small and valuable. We’ve been part of the Opera House scene for many years. It’s just how things are done here, lots of hard work in a very crowded, busy building where everyone knows their job.
