Working on S. V. Road in Malad West means you’re always surrounded by the sound of horns and the general bustle of North Mumbai. Our office at Shubham Motiwala & Jewellers is in the Nirman society building, at number 9. It’s a familiar spot for a lot of people in the neighborhood. The shop floor isn't massive, so things can get a bit tight on Saturday afternoons when everyone decides to visit at once. We spend a lot of time organizing pearls and various jewelry pieces into their boxes. The carpet is a bit worn in places where people stand the most, but it makes the place feel lived-in. We don’t go for that cold, modern look you see in big malls. Instead, we have wooden cabinets and a few chairs that have been here since we opened. We usually have a bit of a struggle with the sliding doors of the display cases, which sometimes get stuck. It’s just a small local business where we know most of our customers by their first names. We don't have a fancy mission statement or a set of corporate rules. We just show up, open the shop, and help whoever walks through the door with whatever they need. It’s simple and it works for us.
