S M Impex

Our office is in Marine Lines, tucked away behind the Income Tax Office. We are on the fourth floor of the Court Chamber building, specifically in unit F/2. S M Impex deals with importing and exporting, which means we spend a lot of time dealing with customs forms and shipping manifests. The building is one of those old Mumbai structures with a lot of character and maybe a few too many stairs if the lift isn't working. From the fourth floor, you can sometimes get a bit of a breeze from the sea, which is nice when it gets humid. The office is filled with stacks of papers and samples of things we move across borders. We have a few computers, but most of the real work happens through old-fashioned networking and knowing the right people at the docks. It’s not a flashy job. It involves a lot of waiting and a lot of checking details. We’ve been operating out of Marine Lines for quite a while. The area is full of professionals and government offices, so it feels very serious around here. We just stay focused on our shipments. Sometimes we stay late to talk to people in different time zones. It is a bit of a grind, but we enjoy the challenge of getting goods through the port. We are just a small team making sure things get from one country to another without getting stuck.
