Prema Tailoring Firm

Prema Tailoring Firm is inside Diamond Mansion in Worli, specifically Shop No 407. It's an older building, the kind that has a lot of character but maybe needs a bit of plumbing work. Being on the 6th floor means I usually take the lift, though it's one of those old ones with the manual gate you have to pull shut. Worli is always loud and fast, but once you get up to the shop, it’s a bit quieter. I spend most of my day surrounded by rolls of cloth and thread. There are scraps of fabric all over the floor by the afternoon, no matter how much I try to keep it tidy. My sewing machine has a specific rhythm to it. It’s an older model but it hasn't let me down yet. The light in the shop is okay during the day because of the big window, but I have a desk lamp for the fine work. People come in with all sorts of requests, and I just do my best with what’s in front of me. I keep my tea in a thermos because I often forget to drink it while it's hot. It’s a small shop, and there isn't much room for more than two people to stand comfortably. I like it that way because I can reach everything without moving too much. It’s just honest work in a busy part of Mumbai.
