Prakash Auto Garage is down at Dayal Bind Chawl on New Prabhadevi Road. It’s a typical garage with lots of tools, oil cans, and spare parts lying around. We’ve been working on cars in this spot for a very long time. The floor is stained with oil and grease, and there’s always a car or two up on jacks. It’s a dusty place and it can get very hot when the sun is hitting the roof in the afternoon. We don’t have a waiting room or anything like that. People usually just stand around or go get a tea while we look at their engines. It’s a lot of heavy lifting and getting our hands dirty every single day. We are a small team and we’ve known each other for years. We don't use any fancy diagnostic computers, just our ears and basic tools to figure out what's wrong. It’s a very manual process that takes time. The chawl is a busy place, so there are always people walking by and saying hello. We don’t do any advertising; our business comes from people who live nearby and trust us with their vehicles. It’s hard work but we’re used to it. We keep the garage open late sometimes if we have a big job to finish. It’s just a local mechanic shop doing its thing day after day.
