Nikita Ladies Tailors

Our small tailoring shop is tucked away in Avon Arcade on D J Road. We’ve been sitting at these sewing machines in Vile Parle West for years. You’ll usually hear the sound of the needles clicking as soon as you walk in. There are scraps of fabric everywhere and measuring tapes draped over chairs. We mostly do blouses, dresses, and simple alterations for the ladies in the neighborhood. Some customers bring their own cloth they bought from the market, and we figure out a design that works. It’s not always perfectly quiet in here since the machines are old, but they still sew straight. Sometimes we get a rush of orders before a wedding or a festival, and we have to stay late under the tube lights. We don't use any fancy computer programs to measure people, just our hands and the old yellow tape. My glasses are always sliding down my nose while I’m trying to thread a needle. We know which colors look good and which cuts are comfortable for daily wear. It’s a messy shop but we know where everything is. You might have to wait if we’re busy with a fitting. People come here because they know we’ve been doing this a long time. The street outside is always noisy with traffic, but we stay focused on the seams. We try to finish things on time, but if a machine breaks, we might be a day late.
