Our office is on the fourth floor of Arun Chambers on Tardeo Road, room 407. If you’ve ever been to Tardeo, you know how the traffic can be, so we usually try to get in early before the roads get too blocked. The building is an older one, but it’s full of character and lots of other businesses. We deal mostly in gemstones, so our desks are always covered in small parcels and tweezers. It’s a quiet kind of work that requires a lot of focus. We spend hours looking at tiny details that most people wouldn’t even notice. Instead of a big showroom, we have a workspace where we sort through stock and meet with dealers. Sometimes the lift in the building is slow, so we take the stairs for a bit of exercise. We’ve been here for quite some time now and the security guards know us by name. It’s a tight-knit community in this building. We drink a lot of tea while we work, and the afternoon sun hits the windows just right for checking the clarity of the stones. We aren't trying to be anything fancy. We just know our stones and we know the people we sell to. It’s a steady business built on showing up every day and doing the work. Tardeo is a busy part of Mumbai, but once we’re inside the office, it feels like a different world. We just keep sorting and grading until the day is finally done and the boxes are put away for the night.
