We are located at 6 Ratan Warte Chawl in Samarth Nagar. It is right in Bhandup West, Mumbai 78. Working in a chawl is definitely different than being in one of those tall glass buildings you see in other parts of the city. It is a very grounded place. There is always noise from the street—kids playing, people talking, and the general hum of the neighborhood. Our space is small and we have to be very organized with our files so they do not take over the whole room. We have a few benches for people to sit on while they wait. The walls could probably use a fresh coat of paint, but we have not found the time to get to it yet. We use a couple of old fans to keep the air moving. It gets really hot in the afternoons, so we usually have the door wide open. Most of our day is spent talking to people who are looking for work or checking in on placements we have already made. We do not have fancy computer systems or anything like that. We use some ledgers and a basic laptop. It is a very local way of doing things. We know most of the people who walk past our door. It is a community here, and we are just a part of it, doing our bit with the manpower services day in and day out. It is honest work in a busy part of Mumbai.
