Mahalaxmi Novelty sits right in Bail Bazar, opposite the Karachi School on the 100 Feet Road in Kurla East. It’s a very busy part of the world. With the school right there, we get a lot of noise and energy throughout the day. You can hear the bells ringing and the kids shouting during their breaks. Our shop is full of small things that people find useful in their daily lives. We’ve got shelves reaching up to the ceiling, and we probably use every inch of space we have. It’s not the most organized looking place, but we know where every single item is kept. If you ask for a specific button or a particular type of thread, we can usually pull it out in a second. The 100 Feet Road is always moving with cars and buses, so there’s a constant hum of traffic in the background. We spend a lot of time standing by the counter, talking to neighbors and helping people find what they need. It gets dusty being so close to the main road, so there’s a lot of wiping down surfaces involved in our daily routine. We’ve been here in Kurla for a good while, and we’ve seen the kids from the school grow up into adults. It’s a simple life, focused on the small details of running a shop. We just open up, do our work, and head home when the sun goes down.
