The MIDC area in Andheri East is always noisy, and Plot No. 87 on Street No. 15 is no different. We at H V Jewels have been working out of this spot for a long time. You can hear the machines running from the moment you walk through the door. There’s always that faint smell of metal and polishing wax in the air. We don’t have a flashy showroom with bright lights and fancy carpets. Instead, we have workbenches that have seen better days and a lot of very focused people. The security guard at the gate knows everyone by name, and we usually share a few words about the weather or the local train delays. It’s a gritty part of the city, but it’s where things actually get made. We spend hours looking at tiny stones and metal settings, sometimes getting a bit of a backache from leaning over the tables. Lunch is usually a quick affair, with someone bringing in a tiffin that everyone shares. We don't spend money on expensive decor because the work is what matters to us. Sometimes the power goes out for a minute and everyone groans, but then we just get back to it. It’s a simple life of making things, and we don’t try to make it sound like anything else.
