Up on the 8th floor of Paradise Heights, things are usually moving. This is in Andheri West, right in the Ladiva area, which stays busy. Being in room 801 gives us a decent view of the rooftops around here. Faiz Fatima Fida Fashion Designer is the name on the door, but inside it just looks like a busy workroom. We have tables for cutting and machines for the heavy sewing work. There is always a pile of measurements or fabric samples sitting somewhere. The elevator in this building takes a while sometimes, so we've learned to be patient. We do a lot of the work by hand when it needs that extra bit of care. It is not like those big factories; it is just us working on one piece at a time. The air feels a bit different up here compared to the street level. We keep the windows open when the weather allows it. There are threads on the carpet and bits of chalk on the tables. It is a practical space for making things. We don't have a receptionist or anything like that. If someone comes by, one of us just steps away from the machine to say hello. It is a simple way of doing things, and it keeps us focused on the sewing. Every season the colors in the room change depending on what we are making. We share the floor with a few other offices, so there’s a lot of coming and going.
