Kalbadevi is always crowded and our spot at the corner of 18th Cross and 19th Main is no different. It is a lot of work just getting to the shop in the morning with all the handcarts and people moving around. The shop itself is packed with boxes. We sell a lot of novelty items, mostly things that people buy in bulk or for small parties. It’s not very organized, to be honest. There are stacks of things everywhere and you have to know exactly where to look. I usually know where everything is, but sometimes even I get confused. The light inside is a bit dim because we have so much stuff blocking the windows. We don't have a fancy website or a catalog. People just come in and ask what we have. Most of our customers have been coming to this area for years. It’s a very traditional market vibe here. We drink a lot of tea while we wait for deliveries. The building is quite old and the stairs are a bit narrow. We spend a lot of time talking to the other shop owners on the street. It’s a tight community. Sometimes we stay open late if there is a lot of work to finish. It’s just how things are in this part of town. We don’t try to be anything we aren't. Just a shop with a lot of stuff on the shelves and even more in the back.
