Our shop, City Gold, is situated right on Banian Street, just across from the Kathri Masjid. It’s an easy landmark to give people when they are trying to find us at 86, A.I.P. Marg. The area stays pretty loud with the prayers from the masjid and the bikes zooming past. Inside, we have our shelves lined up with all sorts of items. It’s not a huge place, but we pack a lot into it. Most days involve a lot of unpacking boxes and putting things on display so people can see them. We don’t really go for those high-end decorations. It’s just a practical setup for selling gold-colored items and ornaments. Sometimes the fans struggle with the heat in the afternoon, but that’s just part of working in this neighborhood. We see a lot of regulars who stop by while they are doing their other shopping. It feels like a small community even though the street is so busy. We keep a ledger for everything and try to stay organized, though it gets a bit chaotic when several customers arrive at the same time. The floor is old tile, and the shelves are wooden. It’s a straightforward business. We show up in the morning, sweep the front, and get to work. No one here is trying to be fancy; we just handle the day-to-day sales and talk to the people who walk through the door. It is what it is.
