We are set up on the ground floor of the Samrat Ashok building in Dharavi, specifically in the Rc 91 area. It is a tight space, but we make it work. Every morning, the area is already humming with activity long before I arrive. Dharavi is a place that never really stops moving. Inside our unit, we have the machines lined up along the wall. There is always a pile of material waiting to be cut or stitched. It’s a bit dark in the back, so we have these bright tubelights that stay on all day. The air is always filled with the sound of sewing machines and the smell of whatever fabric we are working with that week. We don’t have a big showroom. People usually just come straight to the workshop. I sit at a small wooden stool most of the day, keeping an eye on the production. Sometimes the neighbors come in to borrow a tool or just to chat for five minutes. It’s a very close-knit community here. The floor is covered in small bits of thread and dust, no matter how much we sweep it. We work long hours because there is always something that needs to get finished. It’s hard work, and the room gets quite warm in the summer months, but it’s our place. We make things from scratch, and that takes time and effort. It’s just what we do every day down here in C Ward.
