If you head over to Worli West, specifically at 100/3, you’ll find us at Chooyal Woodcraft Decorators. The smell of wood shavings and glue is pretty much constant here. We are a small group of guys who have been working with wood for most of our lives. It’s a messy job, but we like it. The shop is full of saws, benches, and stacks of timber waiting to be used. We don’t have a receptionist; usually, you just hear the machines running and have to shout to get our attention. We’ve been in this part of Worli for years. It’s a good location, even if parking is a nightmare. Most of our day is spent at the bench, cutting or sanding. We do a lot of custom work, so every day is a little different. One day we might be making a simple frame, and the next we’re trying to figure out a complicated cabinet design. We don’t use much technology. A pencil behind the ear and a worn-out measuring tape are our main tools. Sometimes we make mistakes, but we fix them before the piece leaves the shop. We don’t put on any airs. We’re just craftsmen trying to make things that last. If you want to talk about a project, you’ll probably have to clear a spot on a stool to sit down. It’s just the way it is here, dusty but honest and very productive.
