Colaba is always moving. We are right here at Metro House on Shahid Bhagat Singh Road. If you’ve walked past Regal Cinema, you’ve probably seen us. It’s a busy corner of the city. People come in from the Causeway all day long, some just to escape the heat and others for a full meal. We have the murals on the walls that everyone talks about, but to us, they’re just part of the room now. It gets noisy with the jukebox playing and everyone talking over each other. It’s not the kind of place for a quiet nap. We’ve been here a long time, watching the crowds change. Most of the staff has been around for years. We know the regulars and what they want before they even sit down. It’s cramped sometimes when it’s full, but people don’t seem to mind rubbing elbows. We just serve the food and keep the drinks coming. No big secrets here. It’s just a spot in Mumbai where you can sit down and watch the world go by outside the windows. The floors are old, the tables are wooden, and there’s always something happening. You might have to wait for a table on the weekends, but that’s just how Colaba is. We do our work and go home. Every day is a bit different depending on who walks in, but the energy stays the same.
