Bhagwati Embroidery Store

Our little shop, Bhagwati Embroidery Store, is tucked away in the Bhuleshwar area on Banian Road. We are at number 106, right on the 5th floor or sometimes referred to as part of the Baner Road section depending on who you ask. It is a bit of a climb, but we have been here for ages. This part of Mumbai is famous for its markets, and we are right in the thick of it near Allarakha Ebra. The store is filled from floor to ceiling with all kinds of embroidery threads, laces, and small beads. It smells like old paper and fabric in here. We spend a lot of time helping people find that one specific shade of blue or a certain type of needle. It is not a high-tech business. We still do a lot of things by hand and keep our records in big paper ledgers. The market outside is always loud with carts and people shouting, but inside we just focus on the colors and patterns. Sometimes the monsoon dampness gets into the shop, so we have to be careful with the stock. We are not interested in being a big chain store. We like being the local spot where people come when they need something specific for their sewing. It is a lot of work keeping everything organized in such a small space, but we have been doing it so long it feels natural now.
