Bajaj Steel Company

Bajaj Steel Company is situated near the Durga Mandir in the Chhauoni Sader area of Nagpur. If you’ve ever been to Nagpur in the summer, you know how hot it gets, and being around steel doesn’t make it any cooler. Our place is right by the temple, so we hear the bells ringing every morning and evening, which is a nice break from the sound of metal clanging. The office is a small part of the bigger yard where all the steel is kept. It’s dusty work, and you can’t really keep your clothes clean for long here. We have some heavy desks and old wooden chairs that have been around since the company started. There’s a big overhead fan that tries its best to move the air around, but mostly it just hums loudly. We spend our days tracking orders and talking to the truck drivers who come in and out of the Chhauoni area. It’s not a glamorous job, and there’s no air conditioning in the main work area. We just drink a lot of water and keep the work moving. The staff is local, mostly men who have lived in Sader all their lives. We don't have any flashy brochures or a fancy reception. It’s just a yard full of steel and a small office where we keep the books and try to stay as cool as possible.
