Amar Plastic Industries

Our shop is at unit 16 in the Malad Sonal Industrial Estate, out on Ramchandra Lane Extension. This part of Malad is always humming with the sound of work. There are so many small factories here, and we are just one of them. The estate has that typical smell of oil and plastic that you get used to after five minutes. We spend most of our time on the factory floor. It’s loud because of the machines, so we have to shout a bit to be heard. We don’t have a fancy entrance. It’s just a big metal door that stays open during the day to let some air in. The floor is usually covered with scraps and bits of material. We clean up at the end of the shift, but by the next morning, it’s back to the same. Our office is just a tiny partitioned corner with a desk that’s seen better days. We do the billing and the phone calls from there. Sometimes the rain comes down hard on the tin roofs and you can’t hear anything at all for a while. We just keep our heads down and get the plastic parts finished. It’s hard work and it’s often hot, but it’s what we do. The tea man comes around twice a day and that’s usually the highlight of the afternoon for everyone. We have been in this same spot for years now and know all our neighbors well.
