Chembur West is where we spend most of our daylight hours. Our office for Abacus Software isn't in one of those shiny new glass buildings you see in the magazines. It’s a practical space where we sit with our monitors and try to figure out why a piece of code isn't doing what it’s supposed to do. The desks are a bit cluttered with half-empty coffee mugs and old notebooks. Some of us have been working together so long we don’t even need to talk much to know what the other person is thinking. We mostly focus on the technical side of things, staying quiet when the work gets heavy. Outside, you can hear the local trains and the general hum of Chembur West. It gets quite humid in the afternoons, so the AC is always humming in the background, which is a sound we’ve all grown used to. Lunch usually means someone goes out to get food for everyone, and we eat while talking about anything except software for a change. It’s not a high-pressure corporate environment with suits and ties; we’re just regular people trying to build stuff that works. Sometimes we stay late because a project is acting up, and other times we leave exactly on time to beat the station crowd. It’s a steady rhythm that we’ve found works for us over the years, and we don't feel the need to change it. Every day is different.
