Zaid Overseas is situated in Maqbara II, not far from the Husaini Wali Masjid. It’s a relatively quiet part of town, which we like because it makes it easier to concentrate on our work without too many distractions. We mostly deal with overseas shipping and logistics, which involves a lot of sitting at desks and looking at spreadsheets. My brother and I run the place with one assistant who helps with the filing and the phones. The office isn't very large, and it gets a bit stuffy in the summer months when the fan isn't enough to keep it cool. We have stacks of files going back many years. We’ve thought about going fully digital, but there is something about having the paper in your hand that feels more reliable. We spend our days making sure every label is correct and every box is taped up tight before it leaves our sight. Sometimes the power goes out in the afternoon, and we just sit outside on the steps and chat with the neighbors until it comes back on. It’s a small, local operation. We don’t have any fancy mission statements or corporate goals. We just want to do a good job so we can keep the business going for another year. The local tea seller knows our order by heart, and that’s the kind of place this is. It’s just honest work for us.
