S. K. Brick Field

Down in Bagbari near English Bazar you will find S. K. Brick Field. This part of Malda is known for its soil and we have been working it for a long time. It is a big open space where we lay out the bricks to dry in the sun. If the sun is too hot they crack and if it rains they turn back to mud. It is a constant battle with the sky. We have a lot of local guys working here. They know the rhythm of the place better than anyone. There is a lot of heavy lifting and moving things around. The trucks come in early in the morning to load up. You can hear them from a distance. English Bazar is a busy place but out here in Bagbari it is a bit more quiet except for the sound of the workers. We do things the old way mostly. It is about getting the mix right and making sure the fire in the kiln stays hot enough. It is dirty work and your clothes will never stay clean here. But we don't mind. It is what we do. The office is just a small room with some chairs and a desk covered in papers. We keep track of everything manually. It feels right that way. People from around Malda know where to find us. We just keep our heads down and work.
