Koodaisami Small Shop

This is just a small shop near the bus stand in Checkanurani. The name Koodaisami is after my grandfather who lived in this area. It is not a big store at all, just enough space for one person to stand behind the wooden counter and a few shelves behind me. I sell mostly small items like cigarettes, matches, some candy, and maybe some bread if the delivery guy comes on time in the morning. Being at the bus stand means there is always noise around us. You hear the engines and the conductors shouting all day long. It can be exhausting, but it keeps the business going. Most of my customers are in a hurry to catch their bus, so I have to be fast with the change. I don't have a lot of variety, just the basics that people need while they are on the move. Sometimes I run out of things and have to wait for the next trip to Madurai to get more supplies. The roof is made of tin, so it gets very loud when it rains. I have been sitting here for about ten years now. I know the timings of all the buses by heart. It is a humble place, nothing much to look at. I don’t use any ledger, just keep the money in a small tin box. It is a local spot where people can grab something quick and keep moving. No bells or whistles here, just a small shop on the corner for the travelers.
