About Bansuri South Indian Flute – Art & Craft in Madurai
Our little place, Bansuri South Indian Flute, is on South Veli Street, down Veerabadra Layer Lane. It is at 4/1, and the lane is a bit narrow, so you have to watch your step. This is where we make and sell flutes. It’s a very specific kind of work. The smell of bamboo is everywhere. We spend most of the day selecting the right pieces of wood and drilling the holes just right. It takes a lot of patience. Sometimes you can hear someone testing out a flute, and the sound carries through the lane. It’s a traditional kind of spot, not a modern shop with glass windows. We have piles of bamboo leaning in the corners and small tools scattered on the workbenches. Most of our customers are musicians or people who want to learn a bit of music. We don't have a big sign or anything, just the address and the sound of the flutes. It’s a quiet way to make a living. The area around South Veli Street is quite old and has a lot of history, which suits what we do. We just keep working on the instruments, one by one. There is no rush here. If a flute doesn't sound right, we just start over. It is a simple process that hasn't changed much for us. We like the way the wood feels and the sound it makes when finished.
