Banarsi Dass Amar Nath

Being near the Ludhiana Bus Stand means there is never a quiet moment at Banarsi Dass Amar Nath. We are situated on Sat Sang Road in the Sadan Bazar area. It is one of those old parts of town where the streets are narrow and you always hear people shouting or horns honking constantly. Our shop has been around for a long time and the walls show it with their peeling paint. We sell a variety of things and the inventory changes depending on what we can get our hands on from the wholesalers. The shelves go all the way to the ceiling and sometimes we need a shaky ladder to reach the top boxes. It smells like old paper and whatever goods are packed in the cardboard today. People coming from the bus stand often stop in because they are just passing through the city. We see a lot of different faces every single day. Ludhiana is a fast city but inside the bazaar, things feel like they have stayed the same for decades. We don’t use any computers for the main stuff, just big ledgers and blue pens. Sometimes the rain leaks a little near the front door but we just put a bucket down and keep going. It is hard work staying open all day in the heat but it is what we do. We just keep the doors open and wait for the next person to walk in.
