Our shop, Gupta H/W And Paints Store, is located at Shop No-55 in the Aliganj Shopping Complex. We are right on Kapurthala Road, almost directly opposite the Burma Bakery. If the wind is blowing the right way, we can smell the fresh bread and biscuits they are baking over there, which makes us all hungry. Being in a shopping complex means there are always people walking around, but Aliganj has its own pace. We sell a mix of hardware items—screws, hammers, pipes—and various types of paint. It’s a bit of a squeeze inside because hardware takes up a lot of space and the paint cans are heavy. The shelves go all the way to the ceiling, so we are always using a ladder to reach things for customers. Kapurthala Road is usually quite loud with horns and rickshaws, so you have to speak up when you’re talking to someone in the store. We don't have any fancy marketing plans or a polished sales pitch. We just help people find the right size bolt or the shade of blue they want for their front door. It’s a lot of manual work, lifting boxes and counting out small parts, but it keeps us busy. We’ve been in this spot for a while now and it’s become a bit of a second home to us. Sometimes we run out of space and have to stack some things on the sidewalk for a bit.
