Bhumata Farmer Producer Company Limited is based in Dhonara, which is part of the Ausa taluka in Latur. We work out of Belpan Bhaurao Kaste’s place. It is a local house and that is where we do all our business. We are not a big corporation with offices in the city. We are just local people who know the soil here. In Latur, the ground can be hard and the weather is often dry, so we have to stick together to survive. We started this company to help ourselves and our neighbors get a better handle on the markets. It is a lot of work, and none of us were experts when we began. We have had to learn how to keep the books and how to deal with buyers from the bigger towns. Sometimes it feels like there are not enough hours in the day, especially when the harvest is ready to move. We do not have any fancy mission statements. We just want to make sure that the people who work the land get a fair deal. It is about practical things, like finding better seeds or getting a truck when you need one. We spend a lot of time just talking to each other about what the plants need and what the prices are doing. It is a simple life, but it is ours.
