You can find Ajanta Handloom Fabrics 91 over at Plot No. 38 in Vijayapuri Colony. It’s part of the RK Puram area, which is a bit of a maze if you aren't used to it. We’ve been set up here for quite some time, dealing with handloom cloth. The shop isn't on a main road, so it’s usually pretty peaceful, except for the occasional delivery truck. Inside, the shelves are just loaded with bundles of fabric. We get stuff from all over, mostly things that catch our eye or what our regulars have been asking for. My aunt and I run the place most days. We spend a lot of our time just folding and unfolding material to show people the patterns. Handloom has a specific feel to it, and you can always tell when something’s been made by hand because of the little irregularities. We don't try to hide those, as that's just how the fabric is. We aren't a big retail chain, so we don't have those bright lights or fancy dressing rooms. Just a mirror in the corner and some stools. Sometimes we sit out front and have a cold drink when it’s slow. The colony is a nice place to work, and we’ve gotten to know most of the people who live around here. We just keep our doors open from morning until the early evening and take things one day at a time without any big plans. It is just a small local business trying to keep the traditions alive.
