Lakshmi Rice Mill

You can find Lakshmi Rice Mill on Pillayar Kovil Street in Singarapettai. We are at number 56. It’s a narrow street, so things can get a bit blocked up when the trucks come in to drop off the grain. We’ve been operating the mill here for quite some time. The sound of the machinery is something you just get used to after a while, though it can be loud if you’re not expecting it. We spend most of our time making sure the rice is cleaned and processed correctly. There is a lot of dust that comes off the husks, so we are always sweeping the floors. It’s a constant job. The building is old but it holds up well enough for what we need. We don’t have a lot of fancy equipment, just the stuff that works. Usually, there are a few of us around to help unload the carts and fill the bags. We talk to the farmers and the locals who come by. It’s a basic operation. We don’t try to make it look like something it isn't. It’s just a place where work gets done and people get their rice. The heat can be a bit much in the summer months, but we just keep the doors open and carry on. It’s steady work, and it keeps us busy from dawn till dusk.
