Ice Cubes

We've been here on Mavoor Road for a while now. Most people know the spot because it's right in the middle of things in Kozhikode. Dealing with ice is actually harder than it looks. You'd think you just freeze water and that's it, but there's a lot of cleaning and making sure the machines don't break down in the heat. It gets really hot around here, especially in the afternoons. We spend most of the morning getting the bags ready for the local shops and restaurants. Sometimes a person just walks in off the street wanting a small bag for a party at home, and we handle that too. The floor is usually wet because, well, it's an ice business. We aren't a big factory or anything, just a small operation making sure folks have what they need to keep their drinks cold. Sometimes the power goes out and we have to scramble to keep everything from melting, which is a bit of a nightmare. My cousin started helping out last year when things got busy. We don't have a fancy office. It’s mostly just the machines humming and us moving heavy bags onto the back of trucks. If you pass by number 11, you'll see us. It’s not a glamorous job, but it’s honest work and we've gotten to know all the regular delivery drivers by name. We just try to get the orders out on time every day without any fuss or delay.
