If you go to Gumanpura 11, you will find City Mobile Repair Shop. It is a narrow shop, mostly taken up by a long workbench where I keep all my tools. I have these tiny screwdrivers and a magnifying lamp that I use to see the insides of the phones. Most of the work is fixing cracked screens or changing out batteries that have puffed up. It gets very tedious working with such small parts, and my eyes get tired by the end of the day. Gumanpura 11 is a lively area, so there is always someone popping their head in to ask how much a repair will cost. I try to be honest with them, even if the news is bad and the phone is beyond saving. I have bits and pieces of old phones scattered around for spare parts. The walls are covered with posters of old phone models that nobody uses anymore. I have a small radio that keeps me company while I work. Sometimes people leave their phones for weeks and I have to find a place to store them in the back. It is just a lot of sitting and focusing on tiny circuits. The shop smells a bit like solder and burnt plastic sometimes. It’s a quiet living, just me and the broken gadgets people bring in, trying to make them work again for another few months.
