Sanjay Prakashan

Sanjay Prakashan is based at 18, Dr. Kartik Bose Street. It’s a narrow street, and things can get pretty crowded when the delivery trucks try to squeeze through. We’ve been in the publishing game for quite some time, and our building shows its age a bit. There’s always the sound of a printing press somewhere in the background, which is a noise you eventually stop hearing. Days are spent looking over proofs and making sure the binding is right. It’s a lot of manual work that people don't really see when they look at a finished book. The office is usually a bit of a disaster area with stacks of paper everywhere. We don't have a professional decorator; we just put desks where they fit. Sometimes the tea lady comes by, and we all take a break on the steps outside. It’s a very local way of doing things. We know most of the other businesses on the street, and we help each other out when someone needs a hand moving heavy boxes. We aren't some giant media company. We’re just a group of people who know how to put a book together from start to finish. It’s hard work, but it’s what we know. The smell of ink is something that sticks to your clothes, but after a while, you don't even notice it anymore. We just keep at it until the orders are filled. Nothing fancy about it.
