You can find us at the Abad Building in Kochangadi. It’s an old part of town, right near the water, which makes sense for what we do every day. We handle fish and seafood, so things get pretty messy and cold around here quite often. The building has been here for a long time, and you can really tell by the worn-down walls and floors. It’s got some character, I guess. We start very early, usually before the sun is even up, because that’s when the daily catch comes in. The floors are almost always wet from the ice melting in the crates. We wear boots and heavy aprons most of the day to stay dry. It’s loud, with people shouting orders and the sound of heavy bins hitting the floor. We don’t have a fancy lobby or anything like that. People just come in through the main doors to pick up their orders or drop off the day's haul. Sometimes the smell of the sea is quite strong, but we’ve all been here long enough that we’re used to it by now. It’s a lot of manual labor, lifting heavy boxes and sorting through different types of fish. We focus on getting the cleaning and packing done so the trucks can leave on time. It’s a busy life here in Kochangadi. Some of the guys have worked in this building for decades. It’s just how it goes in the fisheries business. Nothing too complicated here.
