If you find yourself near the Bus Stand Road in Iritty, you’ll probably see our sign. Being so close to the bus stand means there is always noise and people moving around, which keeps the day interesting. We handle steel bars and bags of cement, so there is a lot of heavy lifting involved every single day. My hands are usually covered in some sort of dust or rust by the time lunch rolls around. We don’t have a fancy showroom or anything like that. It’s just a practical space where we keep our stock and talk to the people who need it for their building work. Sometimes the rain makes things difficult, especially with the cement, so we have to be quick with the tarps. Iritty is a busy place, and being on this road means we see a lot of familiar faces. We’ve known some of the local contractors for years now. They just call up or drop by, we chat for a bit, and then we get their stuff loaded onto whatever vehicle they brought. It’s a straightforward way to earn a living. We don't spend much time on the computer unless we absolutely have to. Most of the time, we’re out back checking the bundles of steel or making sure the cement stacks aren’t leaning. It’s honest work, and it keeps us busy from morning until the sun goes down. There’s always another truck to unload or another order to fill before we head home.
