Varam Collective Farmers Producer Company Limited is based in Keelmaruvathur. We are at No.102 on Reddiyar Street. This is over in the Chengalpattu area, not too far from the main roads. It’s a busy little spot. We’re a collective, which really just means a bunch of us farmers trying to pool our resources. The office is pretty basic. We’ve got some chairs, a desk, and a lot of registers. We don't have any air conditioning or anything like that. Just the ceiling fans spinning all day. It gets quite loud when everyone shows up at once to discuss the new season. We aren't business experts from the city. We’re just local people who know the land around Kancheepuram. We spend a lot of time on our motorbikes going from one farm to another. It’s a lot of physical work and a lot of phone calls. Sometimes the network isn't great, but we make do. We don't have a big mission statement on the wall. We just want to make sure our families can get by. People stop by Reddiyar Street all the time to ask about what we’re doing. We’re happy to explain it over a cup of tea. It’s a simple way of working, and it feels more natural than the big corporate ways. We just keep our heads down and do the daily tasks.
