Western Art Handicrafts is situated right inside Sojati Gate. If you’ve ever been to this part of the city, you know how crowded and loud it can get. There are shops everywhere and people pushing through the narrow lanes. Our shop is tucked away among all that chaos. It’s an old building with thick walls that keep it a little cooler than the street outside. Inside, we have shelves piled high with different handicrafts. We don’t have much room to move around, but we manage. Most of the day is spent talking to people who wander in or dusting off the items on the shelves. There is a lot of history in this area and you can feel it when you walk around. We’ve been here for years, watching the gate and the traffic change. We don’t really do any big promotions or anything like that. We just open the shutters in the morning and wait to see who comes by. It’s a lot of manual work, moving boxes and rearranging the display. The tea seller usually comes by twice a day, which is something we always look forward to. It’s a very traditional environment. We aren’t trying to be a big modern company; we just want to keep doing what we know. It’s a bit dusty and the noise from the gate never really stops, but it’s home for us. We like the energy of the old city.
