If you go inside Merti Gate, you will find us at Solanki Canvas Store. It is an old part of town, and the streets are very narrow. We have been here for many years, surrounded by rolls of heavy cloth and canvas. The air always has that specific smell of treated fabric. It is a bit dark inside the shop because the buildings are so close together. We spend our days measuring out lengths of material and cutting them for customers. It is physical work. Moving those heavy rolls around keeps you tired by the end of the day. We sell to all sorts of people, from laborers needing covers for trucks to folks looking for something specific for their homes. We do not have a computer system for our stock; we just know what is in the piles. The walls are stacked high. Sometimes we have to use a ladder that is a bit wobbly to get something from the top shelf. It is not a modern showroom. It is a working shop. We listen to the sounds of the market outside while we work. Merti Gate is a lively place with a lot of history. We are just one small part of it. We open early and close when the sun goes down. It is a simple trade, and we have been doing it the same way for a long time now. We just focus on the fabric.
