It is usually quite hot here on Main Chopasni Road, especially in the afternoons when the sun hits the front of the shop directly. We have been here for a good amount of time, right opposite the Union Bank. Most days start with sweeping the front step because the dust from the road just settles everywhere. It’s a busy part of Jodhpur, and there is always noise from the traffic passing by toward the main market. Inside, things are simple. We have the usual chairs and the big mirrors that have seen many faces over the years. People come in, sit down, and we get to work. Sometimes it’s a quick trim, other times someone wants something different because they have a wedding to go to. There is a small bench for people to wait on, and usually, there’s a newspaper lying around that’s a few days old. We don’t really have fancy decorations or anything like that. It’s just a place where you can get your hair done without much fuss. The lights hum a little bit when it gets quiet, but it rarely stays quiet for long. Someone is always walking in after finishing their work at the bank or just passing through the neighborhood. We keep the scissors sharp and the towels clean. That’s pretty much how it goes here every day from morning until we close up and head home in the dark. It is a lot of standing around, but we are used to it by now.
