Shahid Bhagat Singh Nagar Memorial College

In the Massanda Patti area of Nawanshahr, things move at a slightly slower pace than in the bigger cities. That’s where you’ll find Shahid Bhagat Singh Nagar Memorial College. The name is quite long, so most of us just call it the college when we’re talking to neighbors. It’s located in a spot that feels a bit more connected to the local life of the town. We have a decent building and some grounds, but it’s all very functional. There aren’t any marble floors or air-conditioned hallways here. It’s just brick and mortar and a lot of hard work. We see a lot of students from the surrounding villages who come here to get their degrees. It’s a big deal for their families, and we feel that weight sometimes. The staff here are mostly local people who have been with us for years. We drink our tea in the staff room and talk about the weather or the harvest, just like anyone else in Nawanshahr. There’s no big corporate board telling us what to do; we just try to keep the place running as best as we can. Sometimes the plumbing gives us trouble, or we need to repaint the walls, but we get around to it when there’s time and money. It’s just an ordinary college doing its bit for the community in Massanda Patti.
