We are set up on Sikar Road where the traffic never really seems to slow down. Most of our days start pretty early because that is just when the work begins at Vijay Kumar Gyanchand -Shri Lal Mahal Basmati Rice. It gets quite dusty inside the shop with all the trucks passing by outside, and we spend a good chunk of our time moving heavy bags of rice from one corner to the other. You get used to the weight of the sacks after a few months, even if your back feels it by the end of the week. The place isn't anything special to look at, just a practical space with high ceilings and a lot of grain. We have a small wooden desk near the front where we keep track of things, and a ceiling fan that mostly just pushes the warm air around. Sometimes the chai wala from the corner brings over a few glasses in that little wire carrier of his, and we take a minute to sit on the edge of a stack and just talk about the weather or the local news. It’s a simple routine and we don't bother with much else besides getting the orders ready. The sign outside for Vijay Kumar Gyanchand has been there for a long time now. People know where we are on Sikar Road, so we don't feel the need to change anything or make it look fancy. It is just a regular spot where work gets done every day.
