Shree Govind Kirana Store

The shop sits right by Ganga Pol Gate. We’ve been here in this spot for quite some time now. Every morning starts about the same way, unlocking the shutters and dusting off the glass jars. It's a typical Jaipur morning, sometimes dusty and always a bit loud with the traffic passing through the gate. Inside, it’s mostly just rows of staples. We have big sacks of rice and flour sitting on the floor. The shelves hold pulses, spices, and tea leaves. It’s not a big place but we pack a lot in. I try to make sure there is enough sugar and salt because those are the things people run out of most. Sometimes the kids from the neighborhood come in looking for a specific candy or a small packet of chips. Dealing with the suppliers can be a headache, especially when the truck gets stuck in traffic. I spend a lot of time just moving boxes around to find what someone needs. The fan on the ceiling makes a clicking noise but it keeps the air moving. By the time evening rolls around, the street gets crowded. People heading home stop for milk or maybe some matches. It gets tiring standing all day but it's what I do. I usually have a cup of tea around four o’clock. Most of the faces are familiar. We don't have any fancy displays or bright lights. Just a regular store where you get what you need for the kitchen.
