Sharma Kirana Store

If you ever find yourself near the Tampu Stand in Jhotwara, you’ll see my shop, Sharma Kirana Store. We are right by the Khatipura Pooliya, so there is always a lot of noise from the vehicles and people passing by all day. Jaipur is a growing city and this specific area has changed a lot since we first started. The dust from the road comes in every time a big truck goes over the bridge, so I spend a lot of time with a duster in my hand. We keep the usual kirana items like flour, rice, and various pulses. I try to source good grains because the ladies who live around here are very picky about what they cook for their families. It’s a busy spot because people waiting for the tempos often pop in to grab a cold drink or a pack of gum while they wait. The shop isn't very large, but we’ve managed to organize it so everything is within easy reach. I have a small wooden stool behind the counter where I sit when my legs get tired. My nephew helps me move the heavy bags of sugar and salt on the weekends when it gets extra busy. Sometimes the electricity goes out and we have to use candles or a torch, which makes the whole place look a bit different. I enjoy the daily interaction with the drivers and the commuters. It’s a loud and dusty way to make a living, but it's honest work in this part of town. We don't do home delivery, just simple over-the-counter sales.
