Out here on Road No 9-D in VKIA, things are always moving and the air is thick with the smell of industry. Our shed at A-129 P is usually full of the sound of metal hitting metal. It is a noisy place, but that just means we are busy with work. We have a couple of old lathes and some welding equipment that has seen better days, but they still work fine for what we need. The floor is usually covered in some oil and metal shavings, no matter how many times we try to sweep it up. Working in engineering in Jaipur means you deal with a lot of heat, both from the sun and from the machines running all day. We wear our old clothes because they are just going to get dirty or torn anyway. Sometimes we stay late when a specific job needs finishing, drinking tea from plastic cups while we wait for a part to cool down. We don't have a big front office with air conditioning or fancy furniture. Just a small wooden desk near the door where we keep the receipts and the phone. The neighbors on Road 9-D are mostly like us, just small workshops getting through the day. We know the truck drivers who come through here pretty well. It’s a lot of physical work and the grease never really comes off your fingernails. We are just a local workshop doing what we know.
