Shyam Engineering Works

Our shop, Shyam Engineering Works, is located in Krishna Nagar over in the Sarna Dungar area of Jaipur. It’s a dusty part of town, but that’s where the work is. We do a lot of metalwork and fixing things that break. The floors are usually covered in some kind of filings or oil. We’ve been at this for a bit now. It’s not the kind of job where you stay clean. My hands are usually stained by lunch. We have a few lathes and some welding gear. Sometimes the power goes out and we have to wait it out, chatting under the shade. Jaipur gets really hot, so we try to get the heavy stuff done early. Most of our neighbors are doing similar things, so there’s always the sound of hammers or grinding nearby. We don't have a big marketing team or anything like that. People just find us by word of mouth or seeing the sign outside. It’s a straightforward way to make a living. We take the pieces of steel and turn them into whatever the customer asked for. It takes some patience. Not everything goes right the first time, so we just adjust and try again. It's a small team, mostly local guys who live nearby. We share tea and talk about the day’s tasks. That's how we spend our time here in Sarna Dungar. It's nothing fancy, just a workshop where we put in the hours every day.
