Sakhi Engineering Works

Being in Sarna Dungar, Krishna Nagar-A, you get used to the sound of metal hitting metal. Our workshop is in Industrial Area 9, and it’s a gritty place. There is always oil on the floor and grease on my clothes. We work on all sorts of engineering jobs, mostly fixing parts or welding things back together. It’s not the kind of place where you’d want to wear a nice shirt. I’ve been running Sakhi Engineering Works for a few years now. It started small and we just kept adding more tools as we went along. The heat inside the shed can get pretty bad during the summer, but we keep the big doors open to catch any breeze. Most of our neighbors are other factories, so nobody complains about the noise. We have a few regular workers who know their way around a lathe. We don't really do fancy paperwork or big meetings. A customer brings a broken piece, we look at it, and we tell them when it will be ready. Sometimes a job takes longer than I thought because the machine is old and temperamental. That’s just part of the trade. It’s a lot of hard labor and long hours under the lights. My hands are always stained, but it feels good to finish a tough repair. It takes patience and a bit of sweat.
