Priyanka Departmental Store

You can find Priyanka Departmental Store at number 16 in Nehru Bazar. This is a very old part of the city, and the streets are always packed with shoppers and rickshaws. Our store is quite small and narrow, so we have to use every inch of wall space to hang things or stack them up to the ceiling. I use a long wooden stick with a hook on the end to reach the packets of spices or lentils that are kept on the top shelves. It gets very crowded in here during the festive seasons when everyone is out buying supplies for their homes. I am usually behind the counter from early morning until late at night. The air in Nehru Bazar is thick with the smell of street food and exhaust, but inside the shop, it smells more like raw sugar and dried chilies. We have a lot of regular customers who have been coming to this same spot for years. They don't even have to tell me what they want anymore because I already know their usual order. We don't have any modern checkout systems, just an old drawer for the cash and a scale for weighing the loose goods. Sometimes the cows wander close to the door and I have to shoo them away so people can get inside. It is a busy, hectic life in the bazaar, but we are just used to the pace of it by now.
