Premam Marbles India Private Limited is located along NH-8, right near Hotel Hiland in Rajnagar, Rajsamand. Being right on the highway means there is a constant hum of trucks passing by at all hours of the day and night. We are right there with them. Satyendra Kumar is the one who keeps things running around here most of the time. Marble is what Rajsamand is famous for, and we are just one of many yards doing this kind of work. It's a lot of white dust. Everything from the trees outside to our own boots ends up covered in a thin layer of it by noon. We don't have a big marketing department or anyone to handle the phones. People usually find us because they saw the slabs stacked up while driving by on the highway. We spend our days measuring blocks and checking for veins in the stone. No two pieces are ever the same, which keeps the job interesting. It’s not the kind of work where you wear a suit and tie. We are usually in dusty shirts and heavy boots. The office is small and usually has a few people sitting around talking about the latest prices or the weather. Sometimes the heat is unbearable, so we take long breaks in the shade. It’s a simple life. We cut the marble, load it onto the trucks, and watch them head off down the NH-8.
