Om Departmental Stores

This store is on Madhyam Marg in the Mansarover area of Jaipur. Since Mansarover is such a large residential colony we get all kinds of people coming in throughout the day. The shop is a bit larger than a regular kirana store so we have more space for things like plastic buckets and cleaning supplies alongside the food items. The traffic on Madhyam Marg is usually quite heavy so there is a lot of honking and dust coming in from the main road. We start the day by dusting the tops of the boxes and sweeping the front step. It takes a while to check all the aisles and see what is running low. We have several big refrigerators for milk and curd and cold drinks. People from the nearby blocks come here for their monthly grocery shopping and they often bring their own cloth bags. We don't really have a lot of help so we do most of the lifting and carrying ourselves. In the winter the mornings are cold and we have our tea while waiting for the first customer. The racks are piled high with pulses and spices and bags of flour. It is a lot of work to keep track of everything but we have been doing it for years now. We know where every single item is kept even if it looks a bit cluttered to someone else walking in for the first time.
