Kumar General Store

We are tucked away in Johari Bazar, inside the narrow lane called Purohit Ji Ka Katla. Our shop is number 58. If you know this part of Jaipur, you know how tight the streets are and how many people are always around. It’s a constant rush of shoppers and workers carrying big bundles on their heads. Kumar General Store is small, but we pack a lot of items into every inch of it. We sell all the daily essentials that families in the old city need. From small household items to things you use in the kitchen every day, it’s all stacked up to the ceiling. We have to use a tall ladder just to reach the top shelves most of the time. It gets very crowded in the afternoons, and sometimes there isn't even room for two people to stand inside the shop at once. We know most of our customers by their first names because they live just around the corner from us. We’ve been here for many years, and the wooden counter is worn smooth from all the change passing over it. We don't have a website or any fancy advertisements. People just know where we are. Usually, we are just busy weighing out goods or bagging things up for the next person in line. At the end of the day, we pull down the heavy iron shutter and walk home through the alleys.
