Jagdamba Department Store

Being over here on Heera Path on MG Road means we see a lot of different people every day. Mansarovar is a big area and this part of it stays active pretty much all the time. At Jagdamba Department Store, we usually start the day by checking the stock that came in late the night before. The shelves are packed tight because we try to keep a bit of everything, from soap to big bags of rice. The MG Road traffic is a constant hum in the background that you eventually stop noticing after a few weeks of working here. We don’t have a lot of help, so it’s usually just us managing the counter and helping people find what they’re looking for. The space is a bit narrow, so when three or four people are inside at once, it feels very full. We’ve had the same wooden counter for years and it’s got scratches and marks from all the bags we’ve slid across it. In the winter it stays nice and cozy inside, but the summers can be a bit of a struggle when the fan doesn’t quite reach the back corners. We just keep the door open and hope for a bit of air to come through. It’s a practical place for practical people who just want to get their shopping done and get back home. Usually we just sit on the stools and wait for the evening rush to start.
